Wood Creek Elementary School

Summary:

Wood Creek Elementary School is a public elementary school in Farmington Hills, Michigan, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Farmington Public School District. While the district is ranked 144 out of 606 school districts in Michigan and has a 4-star rating, Wood Creek Elementary faces some unique challenges.

One key difference is the school's racial makeup, with a significantly higher percentage of African American students (50.37%) compared to nearby schools like Farmington STEAM Academy (16.41%) and Forest Elementary (35.16%). Academically, Wood Creek's performance on M-Step tests lags behind the district and state averages, with 5th-grade proficiency rates in English Language Arts (29%), Math (11.3%), and Science (19.4%) well below the norm. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism, ranging from 6.2% to 34.3% in recent years.

Despite these challenges, Wood Creek's African American students perform relatively well compared to their peers across Michigan, ranking 93 out of 321 elementary schools. Additionally, the school has a higher per-student spending of $17,380, suggesting that factors beyond just funding, such as school culture and student engagement, may be contributing to the lower academic achievement. By addressing the underlying issues of chronic absenteeism and supporting the diverse student population, Wood Creek Elementary has the potential to improve and better serve the Farmington Hills community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I do not understand how you can only rate a school only on test scores. This school has amazing staff and great faculty. It is true that Woodcreek get A bad report card but you have to see the students and how they love to learn. We get alot of students who come from other failing schools and the faculty does an amazing job to get them caught up and to learn. The test scores are not proof of a great school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
