Summary

Caro High School is a mid-sized public high school in Caro, MI, serving 411 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Caro Community Schools district.

Caro High School's most defining strength is its remarkable ability to keep students on track to graduation. With a 94.0% graduation rate and just a 2.0% dropout rate in 2024-2025, the school significantly outperforms both its district and the state average (84.0% and 7.1%, respectively). This commitment to student completion is a consistent trend over the past five years. Academically, the school shines in 11th-grade science and social studies, where proficiency rates (43.3% and 51.9%) exceed state averages. However, mathematics is a clear challenge. Proficiency rates on the SAT and PSAT are consistently below state averages across all grade levels, suggesting a systemic issue that begins well before junior year. A likely contributing factor is the school's high chronic absenteeism rate of 29.2%, which is higher than both the district and state averages and has hovered around 30% for several years.

Compared to nearby schools, Caro presents a mixed picture. It clearly outperforms Vassar Senior High School in nearly every academic metric, including nearly double the SAT math proficiency (22.1% vs. 12.5%) and a much higher graduation rate. However, it trails Reese High School in English language arts and math, and Kingston High School in mathematics across all grade levels. Notably, Caro's graduation rate is slightly higher than Kingston's, and its social studies proficiency (51.9%) far exceeds Kingston's (40.0%). While the school's state ranking has been volatile—peaking in 2022-2023 before a sharp decline and partial recovery—its consistent success in graduating students suggests a school that prioritizes student support, even as it works to address academic challenges like math proficiency and chronic absenteeism.
