Summary

Keys Grace Academy is an alternative public school in Madison Heights, MI, serving 530 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, and it operates as its own district, meaning it functions independently without a larger district support network.

Nearly all students at Keys Grace Academy (99.81%) qualify for free or reduced lunch, reflecting an exceptionally high-need population. The school's most impressive achievement is its dramatic turnaround in attendance. Chronic absenteeism plummeted from a staggering 59.9% in 2021-2022 to just 8.2% in 2024-2025—now nearly 20 percentage points better than the state average and far superior to most comparable alternative schools in the region. For context, Center Line Preparatory Academy reports 62.7% chronic absenteeism, while NOVA Discipline Academy sits at 85.9%. This shows Keys Grace has implemented highly effective strategies to get kids to school consistently.

However, the attendance success has not translated into academic gains. Proficiency rates remain well below state averages across all subjects and grade levels—for example, 3rd grade ELA proficiency is 9.26% versus the state's 37.5-43.8%, and 8th grade PSAT ELA is 31.6% compared to 64.8% statewide. This is particularly puzzling given the school's high per-pupil spending of $24,674, which is roughly double what New Dawn Academy of Warren spends ($12,686) despite New Dawn achieving dramatically better test scores across all grades. The contrast raises important questions about how resources are being used. While Keys Grace has proven it can fix attendance, extending that success to academics remains the key challenge ahead. Notably, no graduation rate or high school test data is available, making it difficult to assess how the school serves its secondary students.

Open Quote I have encountered multiple former students of Keys Grace who were sadly disappointed in the quality of education they received while there. Many of those students actually returned to the public school system because Keys Grace was that bad. They described it as a Chaldean social hour. Unfortunately it is the most vulnerable members of the Chaldean community who are losing out...those new immigrants who are taken in by community members they expect to look out for them. It seems that the students represent dollar signs more than a chance to help new immigrants to succeed in our country. Thanks for nothing, Betsy DeVos. Close Quote
