Summary

American Montessori Academy Upper Elementary is a public charter middle school located in Westland, Michigan, serving grades 2-8 with a total enrollment of 343 students. The school is part of the American Montessori Academy District, which is ranked 474 out of 613 districts in Michigan and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school faces several challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 29.5% to 44.6% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average and most of the nearby schools. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by M-Step and PSAT test scores, is generally below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math ranged from 18.4% to 43.2%, compared to the state averages of 38.9% to 44.4% in ELA and 31.5% to 42.7% in Math.

The school's performance has been inconsistent, with fluctuations in its statewide ranking and star rating. The school is located in close proximity (within 4 miles) to several higher-performing middle schools, such as Frost Middle School, Riley Upper Elementary School, and Riverside Middle School, which have stronger academic outcomes and lower chronic absenteeism rates. This suggests that there may be opportunities for the school to learn from and collaborate with these neighboring institutions to improve its academic outcomes and support its students more effectively.

Open Quote The School is unbelievably mismanaged. We pulled our daughter out 1 month into 2nd grade because she was being verbally and physically assaulted because she is white. The school has a clear bias and tolerates black on white racism and assault. They will tell you otherwise but actions speak louder than words. Based on Michigan’s bullying policy, the school did not follow the proper procedures. In fact, the student handbook doesn’t even cover bullying other than saying they will not tolerate it. We are one of so many families currently dealing with this hatred from the students but a lot of them are in the same position as us to move our kids out. The school can't maintain a principal and they are losing teachers on a regular basis. We chose this school because of advance placement options. Our daughter was doing 3rd grade work in 2nd grade. The school is a great option if you are from an area with a terrible school district but if you have a halfway decent public school, do not send your child here. We live in Lionvia, thankfully, so we were able to get her back into our local elementary school. The lower campus, pre-1st, was wonderful so we, like many, were given a false impression of how the upper campus is handled. Close Quote

Open Quote My 5th grade son came from a well known and wonderful school district. At the time of entering American Montessori he was an all A student. By the time report cards rolled out, he was all D's and one E! Shortly after his teacher was fired, and the principle found it necessary to tell the whole class. (many students were very upset.) Since then my son has complained about students being violent (throwing chairs, kicking other classmates, and also one instance of someone being stabbed in the hand with a pencil. It is truly sad my son went from loving school to hating it. I WILL NOT BE COMING TO THIS SCHOOL NEXT YEAR! Close Quote
