Summary

Flat River Academy is an alternative public magnet charter school located in Greenville, Michigan, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 154 students. While the school has some areas of strength, it also faces significant challenges that are worth noting for parents considering this educational option.

Flat River Academy has maintained a relatively high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 80.4% to 82.8% over the past five years, on par with nearby alternative schools like Lincoln School and Lincoln Developmental Center. However, the school also has a higher dropout rate, ranging from 7.6% to 8.1%, similar to its alternative school counterparts. A concerning area is Flat River Academy's significantly higher chronic absenteeism rate, ranging from 16.8% to 31.1% over the past two years, much higher than the state average and nearby alternative schools.

Academically, Flat River Academy's test scores, as measured by the M-Step and PSAT assessments, are generally lower than the state averages across various grade levels and subject areas, particularly in Math and Social Studies. The school also serves a socioeconomically disadvantaged population, with 69.48% to 75.97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch over the past three years, significantly higher than the nearby Rockford Public Schools and Creative Technologies Academy. While Flat River Academy's spending per student, ranging from $10,084 to $12,078 over the past four years, is higher than some alternative schools, it is lower than the smaller alternative schools in the area.

Open Quote This is low-budget alternative educational school. The administration turns a blind eye to discipline problems and every year comes up with some new gimmick for curriculum that they never follow through on. They hire unqualified teachers as "long term subs" yet, they are the teacher for the entire school year. Get used to hearing "next year" from this school because they follow through on nothing & have no clue as to what a charter school should be. Close Quote

Open Quote Flat River Academy is a good school if you want to deal with teachers picking on students and favoritism. The have new teachers every year so far because they either quit or get fired. Although they have a great ELA and Art teacher that is not worth the amount of stuff you child will go through there. They have had 3 principles in almost 2 years, one of witch lasted for a week. The best perk I find here is Good friends and it’s an over all small school Close Quote
