Summary

Flat River Academy is a small, alternative public school in Greenville, MI, serving 160 students in grades PK through 12, and operates as its own district within a high-poverty community where nearly 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The most striking story here is one of dramatic turnaround. In 2019-2020, the graduation rate was just 33.3%, but by 2024-2025 it had climbed to meet or exceed the state average of 84%. This is especially impressive when compared to nearby alternative schools like Lincoln School, Freedom Acres School, and Seiter Education Center, which all report 0% graduation rates. Flat River Academy also keeps students more engaged than its peers—its chronic absenteeism rate of 27.8% is far better than Lincoln Developmental Center (71%) or ISDLocal Center Programs (70.1%). With a favorable 13.7:1 student-teacher ratio and per-student spending of $12,125, the school appears to invest in the support services needed to help at-risk students succeed.

Academically, the school shows a clear strength in 8th grade. In 2025-2026, 58.33% of 8th graders were proficient in both Science and Math (PSAT), far exceeding state averages of 39.2% and 33.2%, respectively. This pattern held in prior years, suggesting a strong middle school program. However, performance in lower grades is inconsistent—3rd-grade Math proficiency was just 17.65%, and 5th-grade ELA has swung between 21% and 47% in recent years. This volatility, common in schools serving high-needs populations, means success often depends on the specific cohort of students. For parents considering this school, the message is hopeful: despite challenges, Flat River Academy has proven it can guide students to graduation and excel in middle school academics, even while serving a population that many other alternative programs struggle to reach.

Open Quote This is low-budget alternative educational school. The administration turns a blind eye to discipline problems and every year comes up with some new gimmick for curriculum that they never follow through on. They hire unqualified teachers as "long term subs" yet, they are the teacher for the entire school year. Get used to hearing "next year" from this school because they follow through on nothing & have no clue as to what a charter school should be. Close Quote

Open Quote Flat River Academy is a good school if you want to deal with teachers picking on students and favoritism. The have new teachers every year so far because they either quit or get fired. Although they have a great ELA and Art teacher that is not worth the amount of stuff you child will go through there. They have had 3 principles in almost 2 years, one of witch lasted for a week. The best perk I find here is Good friends and it’s an over all small school Close Quote
