Battle Creek STEM Innovation Center is a small, specialized middle school in downtown Battle Creek, MI, serving just 145 students in grades 6-8 within the Battle Creek Public Schools district.

One of the most striking things about this school is its funding. It spends about $21,000 per student—far more than nearby schools like Gull Lake Middle School ($12,612) or Galesburg-Augusta Middle School ($16,873). Yet that extra money hasn't translated into higher test scores overall. The school's biggest bright spot is attendance: only about 21% of students are chronically absent, which is dramatically better than the district average of 47% and far better than Springfield Middle School, its sister school in the same district, where 52% of students miss too much school. That strong attendance likely helps explain why STEM students perform about twice as well as district peers in 6th and 7th-grade English Language Arts—26% and 23% proficiency, compared to just 15% and 12% district-wide. In fact, 8th-grade ELA scores (48%) are nearly double Springfield's (26%).

However, there's a major disconnect between the school's "STEM" name and its math results. Only about 15% of 6th graders and 13% of 7th graders are proficient in math, and just 6.5% of 8th graders pass the PSAT math section—among the lowest in the area. The school also shows a consistent gender gap, ranking in the 25th percentile for female students but only the 12th percentile for males. Test scores swing wildly from year to year, which makes it hard to judge progress. For parents, this school offers a caring, engaged environment with strong attendance and solid reading instruction, but if math achievement is a priority, it's worth asking tough questions about how the STEM curriculum is being delivered.
