Summary

Gull Lake Middle School in Richland, MI, serves 717 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Gull Lake Community Schools district, consistently ranking among the top 20% of Michigan middle schools.

For parents, the headline is simple: Gull Lake Middle School delivers exceptional academic results. In 8th grade, 78.1% of students are proficient in English Language Arts on the PSAT, compared to the state average of 64.8%, and 65.6% are proficient in Social Studies versus 50.3% statewide. These scores dramatically outpace nearby schools like Springfield Middle School and Comstock Middle School, where proficiency rates in some subjects are in the single digits. Even Plainwell Middle School, the closest competitor, ranks 22 percentile points behind Gull Lake statewide. What makes this even more impressive is that Gull Lake achieves these results while spending the least per student ($12,612) among all comparison schools—Comstock spends more than double that amount ($28,682) yet sees far lower outcomes. This points to strong teaching, curriculum, and community support rather than simply higher funding.

One area to watch is chronic absenteeism. At 23.8%, Gull Lake's rate is better than the state average (27.9%) and far lower than schools like Linden Grove Middle School (over 45%), but it's notably higher than the district average of 17.8%. The school performs well across most student groups, with strong rankings for female, male, White, and low-income students. However, special education students saw a significant ranking drop from the 75th to 39th percentile recently, which is worth asking about. Overall, Gull Lake offers a high-achieving, efficient educational environment, though parents of students receiving special education services may want to inquire about current supports.

Open Quote We just moved to this school district (previously from Portage Central) the office staff was great to work with during our transition and transfer and made our daughter feel welcome informed and acclimated. The kids and teachers are also welcoming and friendly which tells me that the schools have done a great job making flexible and welcoming student citizens. They seem to be tech savy, kids are taking tests on I- pads and learning Mac book . Overall great transition experience and excellent school staff. Close Quote

Open Quote Good teachers. Very traditional structure. A bit of a downshift shock for us, coming from a school that catered to gifted students. If we had to do it all over again, moving to the greater Kalamzoo area, we'd have bought a house in the Portage West school district. Close Quote
