The Kalamazoo Public Schools district includes 17 elementary schools serving approximately 5,269 students from Pre-K through 5th grade (with two schools serving only through 3rd grade), and the district overall ranks in the 35th percentile statewide, though individual school performance varies dramatically from the top 20% to the bottom 5% of Michigan elementary schools.

For parents, the standout school in this district is Northglade Montessori School, which ranks in the 88th percentile statewide and has improved consistently over three years. Despite 46% of its students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, Northglade posts 5th grade ELA proficiency of 67.6% and 4th grade Math proficiency of 59.5%—both far above district averages. Winchell Elementary (77th percentile) and KingWestwood Elementary (80th percentile) also perform strongly, with KingWestwood's 3rd grade ELA proficiency at 61.3%. Parkwood-Upjohn Elementary showed remarkable momentum, jumping from the 60th to 75th percentile in one year. At the other end, Lincoln International Studies School ranks in the 4th percentile with 3rd grade ELA and Math proficiency at just 7%, while Washington Writers Academy (7th percentile) and Woodward Elementary (14th percentile) also struggle significantly.

The top four performing schools—Northglade, Winchell, KingWestwood, and Parkwood-Upjohn—all have chronic absenteeism rates below 21%, while the lowest performers exceed 44%. El Sol Elementary has the district's lowest absenteeism rate at 17.4%, while Washington Writers Academy tops 56.7%. District-wide, chronic absenteeism averages 39.1% versus the state's 27.9%. Math proficiency lags most significantly, running about 9 points below state averages at every grade level. Notably, the highest-spending schools are not the highest-performing—Northeastern Elementary spends the most ($21,936 per student) yet ranks in the 16th percentile, while Winchell spends the least ($14,819) and ranks in the 77th percentile. The PK-3 schools, Indian Prairie Elementary and Greenwood Elementary, show strong 3rd grade outcomes, suggesting early intervention may be more effective than later remediation.
