Summary

Lincoln International Studies School is an elementary public magnet school in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serving 273 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. Despite its focus on international studies, the school consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, with significantly lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math assessments compared to the Kalamazoo Public Schools district and the state of Michigan.

The school faces significant challenges, including extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 29.5% to 50.2% in recent years, and a high-poverty student population, with 83.88% to 93.36% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. While the school has relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $15,382 to $20,868 in recent years, this additional funding has not translated into improved academic performance. In fact, the school has not shown any meaningful improvement in its key metrics over the past decade.

When compared to other nearby elementary schools in the Kalamazoo Public Schools district, such as Parkwood-Upjohn Elementary and King-Westwood Elementary, Lincoln International Studies School stands out as an outlier, with significantly lower proficiency rates and higher chronic absenteeism, despite serving student populations with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. These disparities raise concerns about educational equity and the need for a more comprehensive approach to address the school's systemic challenges.

Open Quote This school was one of the best schools in the state at one time. Over the last 5 years, leadership is non-existent and children are unsupervised, leading thier attention to inappropriate behaviors. I have requested that our child be tranferred from this nightmare! Close Quote
