Summary

St. Michaels Elementary is a mid-sized school in the historic waterfront town of St. Michaels, MD, serving 332 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade as part of the Talbot County Public Schools district. This school truly punches above its weight, consistently outperforming its district in core academics despite a moderate level of economic diversity, with about 48% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Its most defining strength is exceptional performance with low socio-economic status students—ranking in the top 14% of all Maryland schools for effectively educating this demographic—making it a standout for closing achievement gaps.

St. Michaels is a math powerhouse within its district, posting a 35.3% proficiency rate in Mathematics that is 71% higher than the Talbot County average and 30% higher than the state average. This places it far ahead of nearby schools like Easton Elementary (19.1% math proficiency) and Tilghman Elementary (19.4%), though it trails high-performing peers across the county line like Matapeake Elementary in Queen Anne's County Public Schools. The school also boasts consistently low chronic absenteeism (14.0% vs. the district's 25.2%), a key foundation for academic success. However, science scores have been volatile—plummeting to just 6.5% proficiency in 2023-2024 before rebounding to 40%—suggesting a need for stability in upper-grade science instruction.

While St. Michaels spends a significant $20,271 per student, it achieves slightly lower test scores than some neighboring Queen Anne's County schools that spend less, like Bayside Elementary ($17,062 per student) and Matapeake Elementary ($15,546). This suggests room for improved resource efficiency. Overall, St. Michaels is a solid, community-focused school that excels in math and supports diverse learners, but families should watch for consistency in science and overall rankings as it works to return to its 4-star status from 2017-2018.

Open Quote The teachers and support staff are fantastic. The current principal is crass and clearly shows favoritism amongst staff, parents and students. Additionally rules are changed without advanced notice to parents making it difficult to understand what is going on, on any given day. This is a very small school in a tight knit community. We can not figure out how and who determined that she would be appropriate to run a a small elementary school since the school staff, families and PTA are wonderful. The principal seems like a person who is more suited for an administrative position that didn't involve direct contact with children or at an unruly high school, certainly not with impressionable young children at a small elementary school.
