Summary

Samuel Chase Elementary in Temple Hills, MD, is a PK-5 school serving 355 students within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where nearly 90% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. The school has historically ranked in the bottom 10-30% of Maryland elementary schools, though it has shown a slight upward trend, moving to the 23rd percentile in the most recent year.

The most critical challenge at Samuel Chase is its alarmingly high chronic absenteeism rate of 47.6% in the 2024-2025 school year. This rate is 1.6 times higher than the district average and dramatically higher than nearby schools like Maya Angelou French Immersion (9.6%) and Excel Academy Public Charter (15.8%). This absenteeism crisis is likely the core driver of the school's low academic scores, as it is nearly impossible for teachers to build consistent learning when nearly half the students are frequently absent. For comparison, nearby Valley View Elementary has a much lower absenteeism rate (29.9%) and achieves more than double the math and ELA proficiency scores, despite serving a similar community.

Despite these challenges, there is a notable bright spot in 5th grade. Samuel Chase's 5th graders achieved 18.9% proficiency in math, outperforming the district average (14%) and far exceeding nearby schools like Apple Grove Elementary (5.1%) and Avalon Elementary (3.4%). However, 4th-grade math is a significant weak spot, with only 7.7% proficiency. The school spends a substantial $23,147 per student, but this funding has not yet translated into high academic outcomes, suggesting that improving attendance is the single most impactful lever for future success.

Open Quote I have asked for my child to be transferred a teacher threatened my son telling him God was going to strike him down. I had my son removed from his class and weeks later he started telling other kids not to talk to Him. I reached out to the Board of Education and received very Limited Help! My son have gotten suspended for walking away from a fight. But THE SCHOOL NEVER SEND HOME HOMEWORK!!! Do not send your child to this School!!!!! They notify the teacher if and when you want to do a pop up. That’s not helping parents that’s being told by their child the teacher is saying mean things. Do not I REPEAT DO NOT ENROLL YOUR CHILD IN SAMUEL CHASE Close Quote
