Summary

Allenwood Elementary in Temple Hills, MD, is a public school serving 371 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where the vast majority of students (nearly 88%) come from low-income backgrounds.

While the school faces significant academic challenges, there are a few notable bright spots. Allenwood has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 10.8:1, which is better than nearby schools like James Ryder Randall Elementary (14.7:1) and Samuel Chase Elementary (14:1), potentially allowing for more individualized attention. The school also shows a relative strength in English Language Arts (ELA), where 23.5% of students are proficient—more than double the 10.5% proficiency rate in Math. Additionally, chronic absenteeism at 39.8% is lower than at Princeton Elementary (51.9%) and Samuel Chase Elementary (47.6%), suggesting better attendance efforts. A recent 30.6% increase in per-student spending to $24,224 signals a significant investment in resources.

However, parents should be aware of persistent challenges. Overall test scores remain low, with the school ranking in the bottom 11th percentile statewide. Science proficiency has been particularly volatile, dropping to just 3.5% in 2024-2025 before recovering to 12.5%. The school serves its Hispanic students relatively well (46th percentile statewide), but struggles more with other subgroups. For context, the nearby Imagine Andrews Public Charter serves a much different demographic (only 29% low-income) and achieves far higher results, ranking in the 50th percentile—highlighting the strong link between poverty and performance in this area.

Open Quote Bullies run the school and nothing is done about it. Learning and focus is place heavily on passing state exams while students that need extra learning resources are ignored and passed through the system. Every parent I know has opted to remove their child or children from this school and I'm now weighing out other school options for my children. Close Quote
