Summary

Cesar Chavez Elementary in Hyattsville, MD, is a K-5 school serving 355 students within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, and it stands out as a high-performing school that consistently outperforms its nearby peers, especially in English Language Arts (ELA).

The school's most impressive strength is its exceptional ELA proficiency, with 62.3% of all students meeting standards in the 2025-2026 school year. This is dramatically higher than the district average of 38.9% and the state average of 51.7%, and it far exceeds nearby schools like Lewisdale Elementary (25.4%) and Langley Park-McCormick Elementary (11.3%). Cesar Chavez also excels in 5th-grade science, with 40.4% of students proficient compared to just 19.6% for the district. While math remains an area for growth—28.5% of students are proficient, which is double the district average but below the state average—the school's overall academic performance is remarkable given that 65% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Notably, the school's low socio-economic status students rank in the 77th percentile statewide, showing it is highly effective at closing achievement gaps.

What makes Cesar Chavez even more noteworthy is its efficiency and resilience. The school spends $18,842 per student, significantly less than nearby PGCPS peers like Thomas S. Stone Elementary ($25,022), yet achieves far better results. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 18.9% is the lowest among nearby schools and well below the district average of 30.2%. After a dip during the pandemic, the school has rebounded strongly, climbing from the 47th percentile to the 61st percentile in state rankings. While it is still outpaced in ELA by Piney Branch Elementary (64.3%) in the neighboring Montgomery County Public Schools district, Cesar Chavez's consistent upward trajectory and efficient use of resources make it a standout choice for families in the area.
