Paint Branch Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with a ranking between 470 and 704 out of 859-865 schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on MCAP tests is significantly below the state and district averages across all grades and subjects, particularly in Mathematics, where proficiency rates range from 9.2% to 37.3%, compared to 26.5% statewide and 13.1% in the district. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with a 0-star rating for Special Education students.

While the nearby schools in the Prince George's County Public Schools district, such as Riverdale Elementary, Springhill Lake Elementary, and Hollywood Elementary, also perform poorly on academic measures, some schools in the district, like University Park Elementary and Dora Kennedy French Immersion, perform significantly better, suggesting that there is potential for improvement within the district. Despite the school's low performance, Paint Branch Elementary has a relatively high per-student spending of $20,700 and a low student-teacher ratio of 13.5, indicating that resources are being allocated to staffing, but this has not translated into improved academic outcomes.

Open Quote I am surprised to see a 1 star rating for the school. I have two children at the school and rate it 3 stars.

The school is clean and maintained, the students reasonably well behaved and for the most part the teachers I have encountered are motivated and capable. The Principal, Dr. Teston, is highly motivated and very proactive in developing programs such as the Chinese Language program.

Not to exclude any other staff but Ms. Cathcart (pre-K), Ms. Lemberg (K) & Ms. Price-Reid stand out for me as effective and caring teachers. My general hesitation with the school, and belief based on observation, is that the large ESOL population does tend to consume resources which might otherwise be applied to high achievers so I would like to see the Talented And Gifted (TAG) program receive more emphasis but the school does a good job with the resources it has.
