Summary

Laytonsville Elementary is a K-5 school in Gaithersburg, MD, serving 355 students as part of the highly-regarded Montgomery County Public Schools district, and it stands out as a top-performing school with a 4-star rating and a 77th percentile statewide ranking for the 2025-2026 school year.

What truly sets Laytonsville apart is its exceptional performance in mathematics, where 56.3% of students are proficient—a rate that is 52% higher than the district average and more than double the state average. This makes it a "math powerhouse" compared to nearby schools like South Lake Elementary (14.7% proficiency) and Whetstone Elementary (26%). The school also excels in English Language Arts, with 59.3% proficiency, outperforming most local peers. Additionally, Laytonsville has made impressive strides in reducing chronic absenteeism, dropping from a pandemic peak of 28.6% to just 15.0%—34% lower than the district average and far better than schools like Judith A. Resnik Elementary (29.5%) and Stedwick Elementary (25.3%).

Laytonsville benefits from a lower poverty rate, with only 34.4% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch, compared to over 50% at most nearby schools. This economic advantage, combined with high per-pupil spending of $23,265 and a low student-teacher ratio of 12.5:1, creates a well-resourced environment that supports strong academic outcomes. The school has shown resilience post-pandemic, bouncing back to the 77th percentile after a dip, and it is particularly effective at serving its Hispanic students, ranking in the 88th percentile statewide. For parents seeking a high-performing, well-funded school with a focus on math and student engagement, Laytonsville Elementary is a standout choice in the Gaithersburg area.

Open Quote I wish I could say something more positive about this school, but, students deserve stronger support and leadership. Unfortunately, things have changed significantly since the current principal took over (2018). It just hasn’t felt the same since. The atmosphere, the leadership style, and the overall experience for families have all shifted and honestly, not in a positive direction. The principal struggles with communication, comes across as distant and unapproachable, and doesn’t seem to address concerns in a fair or effective way. A lot of parents would like to be more involved, but the environment makes it difficult. Teachers and staff aren’t always open or responsive, and communication can be hit or miss. As a result, most parents end up stepping back. There’s little sense of community and it’s not surprising that PTA involvement is low. On a positive note, there are some teachers who are truly dedicated and doing their best, they deserve credit. Hopefully, more staff, especially the principal, will step up and help bring the school back to a better place for students and their families. Despite the concerns, I'd still recommend this school because the families and students here are wonderful. There's a strong core community that wants to see things get better, and with the right changes, it really could. Close Quote
