Summary

Hammond Elementary in Laurel, MD, is a high-performing K-5 school serving 763 students within the Howard County Public Schools district, consistently ranking in the top 20% of all elementary schools in Maryland over the past decade.

Hammond Elementary stands out for its exceptional academic performance, particularly in mathematics, where 56.6% of students were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—34.5 percentage points above the state average and 14.5 points above the district average. This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Laurel Woods Elementary (28.5%), Guilford Elementary (23.4%), and Forest Ridge Elementary (31.9%), which all fall below the state average. In English Language Arts, Hammond achieves 66.8% proficiency, exceeding the state average by 15.1 points and outperforming Gorman Crossing Elementary (62.1%). The school also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of 13.6%, significantly better than the district average of 17.4% and far lower than nearby schools like Scotchtown Hills Elementary (35.9%) in the Prince George's County Public Schools district.

Despite its overall success, Hammond shows a notable decline in math proficiency as students progress through grades, dropping from 69.9% in 3rd grade to 46.8% in 5th grade. The school also struggles to serve its low socio-economic status students, who rank in the 49th percentile statewide—the only subgroup to receive a rating below 4 stars. However, Hammond is highly efficient, spending $16,153 per student—the lowest among its immediate Howard County peers like Atholton Elementary ($17,575) and Clemens Crossing Elementary ($19,838)—while achieving better academic outcomes than schools that spend more.

Open Quote This school is amazing! From the kindergarten observation day to the Open House, and through the 1 month of school, I have attended PTA night and new family night. Teachers are amazing. Administrative are taking good leadership. Even the parents attending those activities are very involved and caring. Overall it's a very good environment for a good child's well being. Parents, the great school rating is not going to lead to an accurate judgement of the best environment for children. Nurturing a child is a long process. Be patient! Life is not just a test the teachers help preparing in the 3rd grade. Close Quote
