Summary

Dunloggin Middle in Ellicott City, MD, serves 623 students in grades 6-8 within the highly-ranked Howard County Public Schools district, consistently ranking in the top 15-20% of Maryland middle schools with a 4-star rating. This school stands out for its exceptional advanced math program, with 58.6% of students proficient in Algebra I—dramatically higher than the district average of 41.2% and nearly triple the state average of 21.3%. English Language Arts scores are also strong, with 70.8% of all students proficient, outperforming both the district (65.9%) and state (51.7%). The school maintains a low chronic absenteeism rate of 17.3%, matching the district average but significantly better than nearby schools like Wilde Lake Middle (25.6%) and Lake Elkhorn Middle (33.6%).

While Dunloggin is a strong "second-tier" leader in the area, it is outperformed by two nearby "5-star" schools: Burleigh Manor Middle (96th percentile) and Ellicott Mills Middle (95th percentile), which offer advanced courses like Algebra II that Dunloggin does not. However, Dunloggin significantly outpaces other nearby schools like Mayfield Woods Middle (56th percentile) and Oakland Mills Middle (49th percentile). The school achieves these results with lower per-student spending ($17,730) compared to many lower-performing peers, suggesting efficient resource allocation.

One area for improvement is 8th-grade science, where only 38.8% of students were proficient in 2025-2026, below the district average of 44%. This contrasts with the school's otherwise strong academic profile. The school serves a lower percentage of students from low socio-economic backgrounds (25.36%) compared to nearby schools like Harpers Choice Middle (27.9%) and Lake Elkhorn Middle (49.03%). Overall, Dunloggin offers a solid academic foundation with particular strengths in advanced math and ELA, making it a reliable choice for families seeking a high-performing middle school in Howard County.

Open Quote This used to be one of the top schools in Howard County, but the current administration has severely lowered the standards and expectations for academic achievement. It is more important (according to this administration) that the students "feel good" about themselves, so standards have been "adjusted" to make the report cards more pleasing. Many of the more experienced teachers have been leaving the school over the past 3-4 years. Expect the test scores to decline! Close Quote
