Summary

Deerfield Elementary in Edgewood, MD, is a public school serving 708 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Harford County Public Schools district, and it faces significant challenges related to high poverty and chronic absenteeism.

Academically, Deerfield’s test scores are among the lowest in the area. In the 2025-2026 school year, only 14.2% of students were proficient in math and 34.9% in English Language Arts (ELA)—roughly half the district average. This performance is most comparable to nearby Magnolia Elementary (14.6% math, 25.4% ELA) and Joppatowne Elementary (17.8% math, 31.8% ELA). A particularly concerning trend is the "5th grade cliff" in math: proficiency drops from 24.8% in 3rd grade to just 5.6% in 5th grade, a steeper decline than at any nearby school. On a brighter note, 3rd-grade ELA proficiency (39.0%) is a relative strength, outperforming schools like Old Post Road Elementary (34.3%) and Joppatowne Elementary (29.2%), though this progress is not sustained in later grades.

Deerfield spends more per student ($18,567) than higher-performing neighbors like Emmorton Elementary ($15,999) and William S. James Elementary ($16,840), yet this investment has not translated into academic gains. Chronic absenteeism (24.0%) is a community-wide issue, similar to Old Post Road Elementary (29.9%) and Magnolia Elementary (23.0%), and starkly contrasts with Emmorton Elementary (7.0%). Notably, Oliver Beach Elementary in Baltimore County Public Schools achieves top-quartile rankings despite a moderate poverty rate, showing that high challenges don’t have to dictate low performance.

Open Quote My son transferred here from another school in the area. He was below his reading level and his first year here was not a good experience. The teacher was pregnant and was hardly accountable. He loved his specials and the teachers that helped him with his reading were amazing, so we kept him here. His fourth grade year he had Mrs. Wilwow (sorry misspelled it), who retired afterwards. She was a no nonsense and caring teacher and really pushed my son to be the best. She changed his whole dynamic and attitude around. I can not say how grateful I am to her. Close Quote
