Summary

Theodore G. Davis Middle School in Waldorf, MD, serves 999 students in grades 6-8 within the Charles County Public Schools district, and it stands out as a stable, high-performing option in an area where nearly half of its students come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

The school's most remarkable strength is its advanced math program. Proficiency in Algebra I is over five times higher than the district average, and Geometry proficiency more than doubles the state average, indicating a powerful pipeline for top math students. This is paired with strong English Language Arts (ELA) scores, which consistently exceed both district and state averages. Furthermore, the school has a significantly lower chronic absenteeism rate (18.0%) compared to the district (26.6%), suggesting a more engaged student body. Interestingly, Davis achieves these results while spending significantly less per student ($15,169) than nearby competitors like Milton M. Somers Middle School ($19,744) and General Smallwood Middle School ($20,543), pointing to strong operational efficiency.

However, there is a notable "math paradox." While the school excels in advanced courses, grade-level math proficiency is a weakness, with only 21.1% of all students meeting standards—below the state average. This suggests the school is highly effective at accelerating its top performers but may need to bolster foundational math instruction for the majority. Despite this, Davis has been a remarkably consistent performer, holding a 3-star rating for eight of the last ten years, while nearby schools like Benjamin Stoddert Middle School and Mattawoman Middle School rank in the bottom third of the state. This stability makes Davis a reliable choice within the district.

Open Quote As a parent of a student with an IEP, I am disappointed in the lack of follow through of the services that my child is supposed to receive by his case manager and teachers. The school has poor communication from administration as well as teachers. I requested an IEP meeting review 2 months ago that still has not been scheduled. The only people held accountable for actions are the students. Teachers are not held accountable to communicate with parents or implement IEP services. The school has predominantly black students with mostly white teachers and administration. Close Quote
