Summary

John Hanson Middle School in Waldorf, MD, serves 727 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Charles County Public Schools district. The school has shown a modest upward trend, climbing from a 1-star rating to a 2-star rating in recent years, though it still ranks in the 37th percentile statewide. One of its standout features is a strong focus on advanced math: 26% of students taking the Algebra I End-of-Course exam were proficient, which is more than double the district average and even exceeds the state average. This is a clear differentiator from nearby schools like Mattawoman Middle School and Milton M. Somers Middle School, where Algebra I proficiency rates are closer to the district average.

However, the school faces significant challenges, particularly in math for the majority of students. While overall math proficiency is low at 13.1%, there is a concerning "8th grade cliff" where math proficiency drops to 0%—though this may be partly because advanced students take the Algebra I exam instead. In contrast, English Language Arts proficiency is more consistent at 40.6%, close to the district average. The school also has a very low student-teacher ratio of 12.3:1, the smallest among nearby schools like Matthew Henson Middle School (18.4:1) and Theodore G. Davis Middle School (15.2:1), which suggests students may receive more individualized attention.

Chronic absenteeism remains a persistent issue, with 27.8% of students chronically absent, higher than the district average and most nearby peers. Only Benjamin Stoddert Middle School has a higher rate at 29.2%. Despite spending $17,563 per student—more than some higher-performing schools like Theodore G. Davis ($15,169)—the school's academic outcomes are below average, indicating that resource allocation or instructional strategies may need adjustment. On a positive note, test scores in both math and ELA have been rising over the past three years, suggesting recent interventions may be having a positive impact.

Open Quote This school is awful all the way around the board. They do not encourage parent involvement. The teachers and administration only call if your child is misbehaving. My child was failing two classes and I didn't find out until her report card came home because their online system had false information in it. When I called the school to get more info, I was told not to trust the online system. My concern was if my child failed two classes, why didn't her teachers call. I can go on and on and on about how awful this school is. I wouldn't send my dog here to be trained by these incompetent morons. Close Quote
