Summary

Sudbrook Magnet Middle in Baltimore, MD, serves 821 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools district, with 43.73% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Sudbrook stands out for its exceptional English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with 58.8% of students proficient in 2025-2026—well above the district average of 46.1% and the state average of 51.7%. This strength is consistent across all grade levels and makes Sudbrook a high-performing outlier compared to nearby schools like Pikesville Middle (38.1% ELA proficiency) and Woodlawn Middle (26.4% ELA proficiency). However, the school presents a dramatic contrast: only 12.3% of students are proficient in math, which is below the district (21.9%) and state (27.1%) averages. This gap suggests the school’s magnet theme may focus heavily on literacy and humanities. Additionally, Sudbrook has remarkably low chronic absenteeism at just 7.8%, the lowest among all nearby schools and far below the district average of 25.6%. This strong attendance is a key factor in its academic success, especially when compared to schools like Pikesville Middle (40.8% chronic absenteeism) and Woodlawn Middle (37.9%).

After a period of decline from 2016 to 2022, Sudbrook is on a clear upward trajectory, improving its state ranking for three consecutive years from 189th to 124th. The school is particularly effective at serving students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with this subgroup earning a 4-star rating and ranking in the 82nd percentile statewide in 2020-2021. Spending per student is $18,475, with a student-teacher ratio of 14.4, indicating resources are deployed effectively. For parents, Sudbrook offers a strong ELA program and a supportive attendance culture, but families should be aware of the math proficiency challenge and consider how the school’s magnet focus aligns with their child’s needs.

Open Quote The school is going downhill, even though the program is still pretty strong (I only know about Environmental science magnet), the quality of teaching is well below of being acceptable! Please stay away from this school if possible! Close Quote

Open Quote Amazing! Sudbrook is such a unique school. It is rich in culture and diversity... filled with very talented teachers and students. Definitely NOT your average Middle School. Offers French, Spanish, Japanese, Visiual Arts, Drama, Dance, Chorus, Band, Orchestra and Environmental Earth/Space Science! Come see a performance and look at the artwork displays -- you will be so impressed! The Visual Arts and Performing Arts are the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Kennedy Arts Award! Strong academics in the Science Magnet-- very competitive over 380 students apply for 70 spots each year. HS credit for Biology is offered during 8th grade. Uniform gives the school a focus on education and a private school feel. Where else can your child go tuition free and be able to devote 90 minutes to their talent each day? Bravo, SMMS!
