Summary

Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle is a small Pre-K through 8th grade school in Baltimore, MD, serving 235 students as part of the Baltimore City Public Schools district, and it has shown a positive upward trend in its state ranking over recent years.

The most compelling story at Margaret Brent is its unexpected strength in middle school mathematics, particularly in 8th grade. While the school's overall math proficiency (19.7%) is below the state average, it is significantly higher than the district average (13.3%). The standout data point is in 8th-grade math, where 26.7% of students are proficient—dramatically higher than the district average (6.3%) and every nearby school, including Mount Royal Elementary/Middle (1.6%), Hampden Elementary/Middle (2.8%), and Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School (0%). This suggests a targeted and effective math program in the middle school years. Similarly, 8th-grade English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency (42.1%) is a clear strength, well above the district average (32.7%) and only surpassed by the high-performing Hampden Elementary/Middle (49.1%).

Margaret Brent also stands out for its relatively lower chronic absenteeism rate (41.8%), which is notably better than several neighbors like Barclay Elementary/Middle (49.5%) and Abbottston Elementary (55.1%). The school maintains a very low student-teacher ratio of 13.4, lower than many nearby schools, which may allow for more individualized attention. While the school faces challenges common to its district, including serving a high-needs population with 60% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch, its success in 8th-grade math and ELA points to a school that has identified specific areas of strength and is leveraging them to drive a slow but steady climb in its overall state ranking.

Open Quote I have visited their kindergarten class and was very impressed with the teacher and her ability to engage and to keep the students engaged in a reading circle. The school was organized, pleasant and clean. Close Quote

Open Quote Character, Creativity, and Community. This is a school that helps each child develop as an individual while in a small nurturing community. Margaret Brent is the secret of Charles Village. A school which has 280 students grades, pre-k through 8th, has small class sizes that allows for one on one teacher contact. Margaret Brent teaches character education through its Lion Quest program. A program that helps children with team building and decision making. Creativity is something that Ms. Prince, the art teacher, loves to foster in her classes. Whether it is getting the students to help paint murals on lockers in the Ben Carson Reading Room or foster a love for creating ceramics, Ms. Prince is all about it. This year (2010-2011) Margaret Brent began Project Based Learning which has put the discovery and learning into our students hands. Great things are happening at Brent! Close Quote
