Summary

Pershing Hill Elementary is a K-5 school on the Fort Meade military installation in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, serving 434 students within the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district. This school stands out for its strong math performance, consistently outpacing both the district and state averages—for example, in the 2024-2025 school year, 36.8% of students were proficient in math compared to 28.8% for the district and 26.5% for the state. Pershing Hill also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of 13.7%, which is significantly better than the district average of 19.9% and far lower than nearby schools like Meade Heights Elementary (33.8%) and Van Bokkelen Elementary (35.6%).

One of the most notable strengths of Pershing Hill is its exceptional effectiveness with Hispanic and African American students, ranking in the 92nd percentile statewide for Hispanic students and the 81st percentile for African American students in recent subgroup rankings. This success in closing achievement gaps is a key differentiator from other schools in the area. However, the school faces a unique challenge with its military-connected students, who make up a significant portion of the population but rank surprisingly low in the 26th percentile, suggesting a need for more tailored support for the challenges of frequent moves and parental deployment.

While Pershing Hill excels in math, its English Language Arts (ELA) performance is more mixed, often meeting or slightly exceeding state averages but lagging behind the district average in recent years. The school also benefits from favorable resources, including a low student-teacher ratio of 12.4:1 and spending of $16,462 per student, though nearby schools like Manor View Elementary spend more per student without achieving the same results. Overall, Pershing Hill offers a strong academic foundation, particularly in math, with a supportive school culture reflected in low absenteeism, making it a solid choice for families in the Fort Meade community.

Open Quote I loved one of the teachers there, Ms. Norris. My son and daughter both had her and loved her! We were sad when we moved. We were there in 2012-2015. If she is still in 4th grade, you should request her. She constantly kept parents up to date with events in the classroom, would call/email to tell me my kids had great days, and was very responsive whenever I had a question or concern. Loved her! Open Quote Very upsetting with the lack of effort by the teachers and staff in this school. We have lived all over the United States and our children have attended several different locations and this by far is the worst. Conferences are a joke. 4th grade teacher is never prepared and has nothing to show for school work examples positive or negative. Cannot answer general questions about daily class room routines or how the children work together. All she does is yell and makes students very upset. They do not let kids finish breakfast or lunch, my daughter has come home hungry and upset. I DO NOT recommend this school to anyone moving to the area. Close Quote
