Summary

Germantown Elementary in Annapolis, MD, is a mid-sized school serving 467 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district, where over 75% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, reflecting a high level of economic disadvantage in the area.

Academically, Germantown Elementary sits in a middle ground among nearby schools, with overall math proficiency at 25.6% and ELA at 34.6%. This is notably higher than the lowest-performing schools like Tyler Heights Elementary and Georgetown East Elementary, but significantly lower than top performers like West Annapolis Elementary. A bright spot is 3rd-grade math, where proficiency reaches 40.3%, nearly matching the district average and far exceeding its closest neighbor, Walter S. Mills - Parole Elementary (20%). However, the school faces a sharp decline in 4th and 5th grade, with math proficiency dropping to 15.8% and ELA to 27.6%, indicating challenges in transitioning to more complex learning. Despite high poverty, chronic absenteeism is lower than the district average at 16.7%, suggesting effective attendance strategies.

An interesting finding is the spending paradox: Germantown spends $22,248 per student, more than high-performing Hillsmere Elementary ($19,635) but less than lower-performing Annapolis Elementary ($36,018), showing that high spending alone doesn't guarantee results. The school's state ranking has improved from the 24th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 37th percentile in 2025-2026, a positive trend suggesting recent initiatives may be working. Subgroup performance remains a concern, with African American and Hispanic students scoring in the single-digit percentiles, highlighting areas needing focused support.

Open Quote Germantown Elementary School has been a great experience for my 8 and 11 year old who have attended since Kindergarten. The school building was constructed in 2011 so it has all the modern bells and whistles - beautiful gym and cafeteria, smart boards in every room, science lab, etc. The school is very diverse, with many ESL families. From my point of view, this enriches the learning experience for everyone. Notably, this is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school - the Primary Years Programme employed here encourages hands on learning opportunities and encourages kids to be "inquirers" not test taking robots. Italian is the school's adopted language. Although it is a neighborhood school, it has a large student population due to the impressive school facility and ambitious curriculum. The school has an active PTA and there is an after care program here run by Annapolis Rec and Park Dept. Close Quote
