Center for Career & Technical Education

Public Grades 11-12
Summary

The Center for Career & Technical Education (CCTE) is a public high school located in Cresaptown, Maryland, serving students in grades 11-12 as part of the Allegany County Public Schools district. With a relatively small student population of 289, CCTE has a history of low academic performance, ranking in the bottom half of Maryland high schools in recent years.

CCTE's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is significantly lower than the Allegany County Public Schools district and the state of Maryland averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 8.8% of CCTE students were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 25.5% for the district and 24.1% for the state. Additionally, CCTE has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 45.45% to 52.94% in recent years, which is higher than the nearby Mountain Ridge High (47.96%), Fort Hill High (58.24%), and Allegany High (53.51%).

Despite the higher per-student spending at CCTE, the school's academic performance remains significantly lower than the district and state averages, suggesting that the school may be facing challenges in effectively utilizing its resources to improve student outcomes. When compared to the nearby high schools, CCTE consistently underperforms on key metrics such as test scores, free and reduced lunch rates, and statewide rankings, indicating that the school may need to implement more targeted interventions and strategies to address the unique needs of its student population and improve overall academic achievement.

Open Quote My child went here and graduated in 2015. I can honestly say that the school administration and teaching staff are excellent in every way. This is the first school that I have felt truly cares about the students and works for them. The Principal is approachable and she is very involved with her students. The teachers make sure kids "get it" and want to see them successful beyond high school. I have a child in middle school and they have already decided that they want to go to the Career Center.
