Summary

Allegany High in Cumberland, MD, is a public high school serving 719 students in grades 9-12 within the Allegany County Public Schools district, where about half of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has earned a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger for the 2025-2026 school year, ranking 96th out of 227 high schools statewide—a notable recovery from a 1-star rating in 2019.

Allegany’s strongest academic differentiator is its exceptional English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with 64.6% of students proficient compared to 57% at nearby Fort Hill High and 51.5% at Mountain Ridge High School. However, math tells a two-track story: overall math proficiency is low at 11.8%, driven by weak scores in Algebra I (6.2%) and Geometry (6.3%), yet students who advance to Algebra II achieve a remarkable 73.9% proficiency rate—far above the state average of 27.1% and comparable to Fort Hill’s 72.7%. This suggests a select group of high-performing math students, while the general student body struggles with foundational courses. The school also shows strength in supporting economically disadvantaged students, earning a 4-star rating for this subgroup in 2020-2021.

A major challenge is chronic absenteeism, which affects 41.2% of students—slightly better than Fort Hill (45.4%) but significantly higher than the district average (33.6%). This issue, hovering around 40-50% for four years, likely contributes to a fluctuating graduation rate that dropped from 93.3% in 2022 to 85.1% in 2023 before recovering to 92% in 2025. Compared to the specialized Center for Career & Technical Education, which serves 11th and 12th graders focused on hands-on training and has low test scores (4.2% math, 30.6% ELA), Allegany offers a more traditional academic path with clear strengths in ELA and advanced math for motivated students.

Open Quote Having several children pass through Allegany High School, I have found the dedication of the staff and facualty to be outstanding. There are a broad range of AP classes to choose from and my children have been well prepared for college. I had my children in a private school, but removed them for the advanced teaching offered at Allegany. Close Quote
