Summary

Murdock High School is a small public high school serving grades 9–12 in Winchendon, MA, with 256 students, and it sits within the Winchendon district, which ranks 315th of 351 districts statewide (10th percentile, 1 star). Murdock itself ranked 296th of 353 schools in 2025–2026 (16th percentile, 1 star), a return to the bottom quartile after a stronger 2024–2025, when it placed 239th of 349 (32nd percentile, 2 stars).

The most important recent change is a sharp drop in graduation and a spike in dropout. Murdock’s graduation rate fell to 77.3% in 2024–2025, down from 89.8% the year before, and its dropout rate jumped to 18.2%, the highest among nearby schools — compare that with 0.9% at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical and 0.0% at Oakmont Regional High School. On 2025–2026 10th-grade MCAS, Murdock scored 20.37% proficient in ELA, 27.78% in math, 18.00% in science, and 16.67% in biology — below the state in every subject. ELA and science dropped steeply from the prior year, and math has stayed well below the state for years. Still, Murdock generally outperforms its own district average, and it outperforms Goodrich Academy and Gardner Academy for Learning and Technology on several measures.

Resources alone do not seem to explain these results. Murdock’s student–teacher ratio was 11.2 in 2024–2025 — lower than most nearby schools — and its 2020–2021 per-student spending of $16,266 was mid-pack locally, above Gardner High and Oakmont, which post much stronger graduation and dropout figures. Subgroup results are low across the board: in 2025–2026 every reported group was below the state midpoint, with White, male, and low-income students in the bottom 14–16th percentiles. In short, Murdock looks more like the lower-performing local group — Fitchburg High, Athol High, and Narragansett Regional High — than like Montachusett or Oakmont.

The teachers show a lack of interest in their students and their teaching positions. The biggest problem is turning a blind eye to bullying. They claim to care about the students but when an issue comes up, they turn a blind eye and ignore the situation. The teachers embarrass students in front of others regarding grades and homework. They show preferential treatments towards athletes, scholars, and students from popular families over who they deem to be an underachiever. The administrative staff sets unrealistic goals for students with no concern over their emotional and physical well being. Close Quote
