Summary

South West Middle School is a grades 5–8 school in Quincy, Massachusetts, serving 449 students at 444 Granite Street, with a 2-star rating for 2025-26. Its story is one of real, sustained improvement that has recently stalled. In 2015-16 the school ranked 412 of 482 Massachusetts middle schools (15th percentile, 1 star). Over the next nine reporting years it climbed steadily to 48th percentile in 2024-25, then eased back to 41st percentile — 283rd of 478 — in 2025-26. That is roughly a 33-point percentile gain from its low point, but the most recent year is the first step backward in four years, and the school has never broken through to 3 stars overall.

On the 2025-26 MCAS Next Generation tests, proficiency was 37.44% in ELA, 30.48% in math, 38.24% in science, and 27% in civics. South West trails both its district and the state in all four subjects, but not equally: ELA and science are close to the state average, while math (10.63 points below the state) and civics (12.8 below) are the clear weak spots. Grade-level results are the most striking internal pattern — fifth-grade math (44.34%) and fifth-grade science (46.23%) both exceed the district and state, while seventh-grade math (19.09%) is roughly half the state figure. Science was the year's bright spot, rising 4.57 points while the district's science result fell 1.94.

Within Quincy, Central Middle and Atlantic Middle perform in a much higher band, while South West sits at the top of a lower cluster that includes Broad Meadows Middle and Point Webster Middle; South West edges both peers in math and science. Resources do not appear to be the constraint: the school spends $16,896 per student with an 11.8-to-1 student-teacher ratio, yet Atlantic Middle posts 49.63% math proficiency with the group's highest ratio and lowest spending. The largest internal gap is between female students (57th percentile) and male students (25th percentile). Results with low-income students have stayed above the state median for three straight years, reaching 57th percentile in 2025-26.
