Summary

Granite Valley School is a public elementary school in Monson, MA — a small town in Hampden County in western Massachusetts — serving about 400 students in grades 1 through 6 as part of the Monson district. The district ranks 286th of 351 Massachusetts districts (19th percentile), while the school ranks 607th of 899 elementary schools in 2025–2026 (32nd percentile, 2 stars). Its rank slipped from a 44th-percentile peak in 2020–2021 and has stayed in the low 30s since. The student-teacher ratio was 12.1 in 2024–2025, up from 9.2 the prior year, and per-student spending was $18,256 in 2020–2021.

On 2025–2026 MCAS tests, Granite Valley outperformed its own district in all three subjects, but remained below the state in English Language Arts (31.62% vs. 40.03%) and math (30.16% vs. 41.11%), while science came close (38.24% vs. 40.98%). Grade-level results are uneven: 6th grade math, 3rd grade ELA, and science are relative strengths, while 4th grade math (22.95%), 5th grade math (23.53%), and 5th grade ELA (23.53%) lag far behind state averages. Compared with nearby schools, Granite Valley trails several peers with similar resources: Brimfield Elementary (81st percentile) and Green Meadows Elementary (70th percentile) post much higher proficiency despite similar spending, and Soule Road outperforms it while spending less ($15,261 vs. $18,256). It does outperform Warren Elementary and Old Mill Pond in most subjects. Among student groups, special education is a relative strength (58th percentile, 3 stars), while low-income students rank at the 26th percentile, down from the low 40s.
