Winthrop School is a public elementary school at 325 Bay Rd in South Hamilton, MA, serving grades PK–5 with 329 students — the largest of the three elementary schools in the Hamilton-Wenham district and one of the larger elementaries in its surrounding area.

Winthrop is a solidly above-state school: in 2025-26, 55.97% of students met expectations in English Language Arts, 62.26% in math, and 52.73% in science — roughly 16, 21, and 12 points above the Massachusetts averages. It ranks 182 of 899 elementary schools statewide (80th percentile, 4 stars). The catch is local: both in-district neighbors outperform it. Bessie Buker Elementary, 0.81 miles away, beats Winthrop on all ten reported test lines and holds 5 stars, while Cutler School, 0.64 miles away, beats it on seven of ten. Still, Winthrop's third-grade math (73.68%) is above Cutler and more than 31 points above the state, and special education is its fastest-improving subgroup, moving from the 64th to the 79th percentile in a year.

Two things are worth watching. ELA has slipped below the district for three straight years and is down about 12 points from 2022-23, and fifth-grade math (50.88%) trails the district by roughly 15 points — though science is tested only in fifth grade, so the science drop and the fifth-grade math dip describe the same small group of students, and both still exceed state averages. Winthrop has drifted from the 93rd percentile in 2015-16 to the low 80s today, but the decline has stopped over the last two years. The wider region is highly variable: Willis E Thorpe in Danvers trails Winthrop by about 9 points in ELA and 10 in math, while Ayers/Ryal Side School in Beverly posts the region's second-best math on the lowest per-student spending in the comparison set.
