Summary

Cutler School is a K–5 elementary school serving 246 students in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, and is the smallest of the three elementary schools in the Hamilton-Wenham Regional District, a district ranked 32nd of 351 statewide. Cutler's own history is not a straight line: after years near the 82nd–89th percentile, it slid through 2022–23, dropped to the 37th percentile in 2023–24, then recovered over two years to reach the 87th percentile in 2025–26 — its best standing since 2017–18. The fairest framing is that 2023–24 was the anomaly and the school has since returned to its historical norm.

In 2025–26, math is Cutler's standout: 69.23% of students were proficient, 28 points above the state and second only to Bessie Buker Elementary among 11 nearby schools. Fifth-grade math hit 80% proficient — roughly double the state rate and 14 points above its own district. ELA is strong at 61.21%, about 21 points above the state, though a touch behind the district. Science is the relative soft spot at 57.14%: above state, but behind Bessie Buker, Paul F Doyon Memorial, and the district. Within Hamilton-Wenham the ordering is unambiguous — Bessie Buker ahead of Cutler, Cutler comfortably ahead of Winthrop School. Cutler also has the district's lowest student-teacher ratio, 11.1.

The 2023–24 dip was school-wide rather than concentrated in one group, and the rebound was equally broad, which points to a cohort- or school-level event. One caveat: students with disabilities were last measured in the 31st–47th percentile range, and no current data is published for them, so it is unknown whether they shared in the recovery. Science, tested only in grade 5, rests on a single small cohort, and per-pupil spending figures date to 2020–21. With roughly 35–45 students per grade, a few students can shift a percentage — though the 2023–24 ELA drop was far too large to be cohort noise alone.
