Gen John J Stefanik is a PK–5 elementary school at 720 Meadow Street in Chicopee, Massachusetts, serving 392 students in one of the larger elementary buildings in the Chicopee district. Statewide it ranks 522nd of 899 elementary schools — the 42nd percentile, or two stars — and it has landed at exactly the 42nd percentile for three years running, with its only three-star year back in 2016-2017 at the 68th percentile. That statewide picture undersells the school, though, because its own district ranks 283rd of 351 districts.

Compared with nearby Chicopee elementaries, Gen John J Stefanik leads in English language arts (34.92%) and science (48.33%), well ahead of Barry and Bowe, and it beats its district in all three subjects by 7.7 to 14.3 points. In science it also beats the state by about 7 points — something no other nearby school does. The one peer that edges it out is Lambert-Lavoie, which scores 43.24% in math versus Stefanik's 35.11%, a gap that also shows up in individual grades. Notably, Stefanik gets far better ELA results than several Holyoke schools that spend $900–$1,700 more per student, including H.B. Lawrence School, Maurice A Donahue Elementary and Morgan Full Service Community School. Class sizes have shrunk three years in a row, to 11.8 students per teacher.

Science is a genuine strength, staying between 44% and 54% over three years. English learner and low-income students rank in the top quarter of the state, while students with disabilities have ranked in the bottom third for years — the school's most persistent weakness. Overall, Stefanik is the academic anchor of its neighborhood: strong in reading and science, above its district everywhere, with math and special education as its two open questions.
