Summary:

Holyoke has eight schools — six elementary, one middle, and one high school — serving roughly 4,293 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, and the Holyoke district sits near the very bottom of Massachusetts, ranked 346 of 351 at the 1st percentile. Every school listed scores below the state in English language arts (ELA), math, and science. Test scores are mostly 2025-26 MCAS Next Generation percent proficient, spending is per-student from 2020-21, and student-teacher ratios are from 2024-25. Free/reduced-lunch percentages are blank for all schools, so poverty-related comparisons are not possible here.

Among elementary and middle schools, Lt Elmer J McMahon Elementary is the clearest bright spot: 28.89% proficient in ELA, 24.44% in math, and 25.00% in science, up roughly 9 to 12 points in each subject from 2024-25, with its rank percentile rising from 12 to 23. E N White Elementary is next (24.06% ELA, 16.04% math, 16.13% science) but slipped from last year, including a nearly 13-point drop in science. Maurice A Donahue Elementary stands out in science (21.57%) but remains low in ELA (9.88%) and math (8.64%). At the bottom, H.B. Lawrence School (7.61% ELA, 2.17% math) and Kelly Elementary (5.39% ELA, 1.80% math) rank 898th and 896th of 899 elementary schools.

Math is the weakest subject district-wide at 6.44%, versus 11.35% in ELA and 10.08% in science — about 35 points below the state. Lt Clayre Sullivan Middle School scores 3.91% in math and 5.30% in science, and Holyoke High posts 16.23% ELA, 7.87% math, and 9.42% science at grade 10, alongside an 81.3% graduation rate. Science is comparatively the least weak elementary subject, with five of seven elementary and middle schools beating the district average. Spending and class size show no simple link to results, so families should weigh these numbers carefully.
