Roland Hayes

Summary:

Heath is an exceptional elementary school located in Chestnut Hill, MA, serving 459 students in grades K-8. As part of the highly-ranked Brookline school district, Heath has consistently maintained a top-10% ranking among Massachusetts elementary schools, thanks to its outstanding academic performance and commitment to equity.

Heath students consistently outperform state and district averages on MCAS Next Generation assessments, with 75.08% proficient or better in English Language Arts and 71.19% in Mathematics, compared to 69.41% and 69.7% in the Brookline district, respectively. Heath's performance is particularly strong across various student subgroups, ranking 22nd out of 703 Massachusetts elementary schools for its special education students and 5th out of 33 schools for its multi-racial students. The school's diverse student population, with 54.68% White, 11.33% Hispanic, 15.9% Asian, and 4.58% African American students, reflects the broader demographic trends in the Chestnut Hill area.

When compared to other nearby schools in the Brookline district, such as Florida Ruffin Ridley, John D Runkle, and William H Lincoln, Heath consistently outperforms them on MCAS assessments and maintains a higher ranking among Massachusetts elementary schools. The performance gap becomes even more pronounced when comparing Heath to schools outside the Brookline district, such as those in the Boston Public Schools system, where schools like Lyon K-8, Edison K-8, and Winship Elementary lag significantly behind Heath in academic achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Heath is a great school- great education, caring and involved parents, diverse student body with largely high achieving students. Ranks the best of all 8 schools in Brookline. Great principle (Carrie Wilson) and most of the teachers are really strong-- Lindsay Bingenheimer (1st grade), Vicky Ferstler (3rd grade) and Kathleen O'Connell (4th grade) have been stand-out teachers for us. Avoid Chari Dalsheim (2nd grade)-- she is emotionally abusive to her students and made my child feel anxious and afraid. (Lots of complaints against her but she has tenure!) The art teacher, Mr. P. is top notch, as is the music teacher, Meredith Huntley. I've also heard great things about all the teachers for 6-8th grade. Having the K-8 model for Brookline schools is so great-- it keeps the older kids young longer and allows all the grades to intermingle successfully.

Spend the extra money for a Brookline house-- you can save some money buying in Newton, but the middle schools are toxic for kids and the culture is way too high pressured, given that the schools aren't as high performing as Brookline. My one complaint is that way too much money and time goes to special needs and not enough money and time to high performing kids. But this is sadly true everywhere. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
