East St. John High School in Reserve, LA, is a large public high school serving 1,293 students in grades 9-12 within the St. John the Baptist Parish school district, an area where 75.5% of students now qualify for free or reduced lunch—a sharp increase from 47.7% just two years ago.

The school faces significant challenges that set it apart from nearby schools. Most notably, 34% of students are chronically absent, nearly double the state average of 22.5% and far higher than Hahnville High School (12.4%) and Destrehan High School (8.4%) in the neighboring St. Charles Parish district. The graduation rate has improved to 74.1%, but remains 11 points below the state average and well behind West St. John High School (92%+). Academic proficiency on LEAP exams also lags: only 32% of students are proficient in Algebra I and Biology, compared to state averages of 65% and 60%, respectively.

There are some positive signs. The dropout rate has dropped dramatically from 25.3% to 8.0% in recent years, and the school shows relative strength in serving its African American students, who rank in the 41st percentile statewide. However, support for special education students is a critical weakness, ranking in the 2nd percentile. The high absenteeism rate—which actually increased last year—remains the biggest barrier to progress, as it directly impacts test scores and graduation rates. While the school is improving, it still has a long way to go to match the performance of nearby high-performing schools in St. Charles Parish.
