Summary

L.J. Alleman Middle School in Lafayette, LA, is a high-performing public school serving 890 students in grades 6-8 within the Lafayette Parish school district, which ranks in the top 27% of districts statewide.

This school stands out as an academic leader in the region, with 86% of students proficient in both Math and English Language Arts—dramatically higher than district and state averages. For context, the next highest-performing nearby school, Edgar Martin Middle School, posted scores of 75% in Math and 79% in ELA. The gap is even wider when compared to schools like Carencro Middle School (39% Math, 56% ELA) or Paul Breaux Middle School (28% Math, 41% ELA). L.J. Alleman has maintained a remarkably stable state ranking in the top 15% of all Louisiana middle schools for the past decade, while many nearby schools experience significant year-to-year fluctuations. The school also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of 14.5%, far below the district average of 24.0% and dramatically lower than Paul Breaux Middle School (54.8%) or Lafayette Middle School (46.5%), suggesting a highly engaged student body and positive school culture.

Interestingly, L.J. Alleman achieves these results with a higher student-teacher ratio of 20.3, compared to Edgar Martin Middle School's lower ratio of 15.1, indicating that success is driven by factors like instructional quality and school culture rather than class size alone. While the school excels across all student subgroups—ranking in the top 13% statewide for White, African American, and Special Education students—there has been a slight decline in rankings for some subgroups between the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years, which warrants attention. Overall, L.J. Alleman serves as a beacon of stability and high performance in a district where many schools struggle, offering families a reliable, high-quality educational option.

Open Quote LJ Alleman has a great Arts Academy. The teachers are interested in their students. While the school population is very large, there aren't that many discipline problems. Very attractive campus, too. Close Quote
