Summary

Ella C. Pittman Elementary School in Harvey, LA, serves 471 students in grades PK-5 within the Jefferson Parish school district, and it has recently shown a promising upward trend after years of lower performance. The school has improved from a 1-star rating to a 2-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year, now ranking in the 34th percentile statewide. This is its best performance since 2019, driven by strong gains in both Math and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency over the past few years. For example, Math proficiency rose from 37% in 2022-2023 to 48% in 2025-2026, while ELA proficiency jumped from 42% to 61% in the same period. The school serves a predominantly low-income population, with 80.25% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch.

One of the most notable strengths at Pittman is its exceptional 4th-grade cohort, which outperforms many nearby schools. In 2025-2026, 71% of 4th graders were proficient in Math and 69% in ELA, surpassing the district average and even beating high-performing schools like Shirley Johnson/Gretna Park Elementary School in Math. However, the school faces a significant challenge with a "5th Grade Wall," where performance drops dramatically. Only 31% of 5th graders were proficient in Math, compared to 53% district-wide, and 39% in Social Studies versus 50% district-wide. This sharp decline is the most severe among comparable schools and suggests a need for better curriculum alignment or support at this transition point.

Pittman has also made remarkable progress in reducing chronic absenteeism, which fell from a crisis-level 42.5% in 2020-2021 to 18.5% in 2024-2025—now better than both the district and state averages. This improvement is likely a key driver of the school's academic gains. Nearby, Laureate Academy Charter School has similar demographics and slightly higher overall proficiency, but Pittman’s 4th-grade Math performance far exceeds Laureate’s. The school is also improving its effectiveness with its core student population, with African American and low-income students showing notable gains in state rankings. While Pittman is surrounded by top-tier magnet schools like Ruppel Academie Francaise and Gretna No. 2 Academy for Advanced Studies, its recent trajectory suggests it is becoming a stronger option for families in the area.
