Summary

South Grant Elementary School in Dry Prong, LA, serves 487 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade and is part of the Grant Parish school district, which ranks in the 61st percentile statewide. The school has earned a consistent 3-star rating and stands out for its exceptional English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with 80% of students proficient in ELA—well above the state average of 70% and the district average of 72%. This strength places it on par with higher-ranked schools like Ball Elementary and Tioga Elementary in the neighboring Rapides Parish district, despite those schools being in a higher-ranked district overall.

One of the most notable features of South Grant is its remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of just 15.0%, which is significantly lower than the Grant Parish district average of 25.3% and the state average of 22.5%. This is a stark contrast to many nearby schools in Rapides Parish, such as L.S. Rugg Elementary School (42.0%) and D.F. Huddle Elementary (33.8%), where absenteeism rates are much higher. This low rate suggests strong family and student engagement, which directly supports academic success. Additionally, South Grant shows consistent, above-average proficiency across all subjects, outperforming its own district in math (65% vs. 57%), ELA (80% vs. 72%), and social studies (57% vs. 47%).

While South Grant is a strong school, it has seen a slight decline in its overall ranking over the past two years, dropping from the 72nd percentile to the 60th percentile, with math proficiency falling from 76% to 65%. The school also faces a challenge in ensuring equitable outcomes for all student groups. An interesting comparison is Rosenthal Montessori Elementary School in Rapides Parish, which serves a similar high-poverty population (88.8% free/reduced lunch) but achieves top-tier results (87th percentile, 4-star) with the lowest chronic absenteeism rate (7.3%) in the area. This highlights how school culture and instructional approach can overcome socioeconomic challenges, offering a valuable perspective for parents evaluating South Grant’s strengths and areas for growth.

Open Quote The teachers are wonderful and the learning environment is great. However, the staff at the front office are rude and condescending to the parents. Parents should feel free to call the school with any concerns, but instead they are talked down to and ridiculed. I even witnessed the school nurse embarrass a parent and make her cry in front of several staff and students. This problem should be addressed. Close Quote

Open Quote I only score this school a 1 because I can't score it a 0 on this particular scale. If your child has ANY type of special need, this is NOT your child's school. They have absolutely no-one that can handle these needs NOR will they even attempt a try at it. If they have to work at it, they just assume have you come pick up your child and simply choose to ignore any and all issues. Their education levels may be decent, but I'd guess if I sent home every child I simply didn't want to deal with, of course, those false indications would be apparent. Close Quote
