Summary

Great Hearts Harveston is a public charter elementary school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, serving 292 students from kindergarten to 7th grade. The school is part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school district, which is ranked 81 out of 118 districts in the state.

Great Hearts Harveston consistently outperforms the district and state averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency across all grade levels. In the 2024-2025 school year, 64% of students were proficient or better in Mathematics, and 74% were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 51% and 61% for the district, and 60% and 70% for the state, respectively. The school's performance is particularly strong in ELA, with 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students scoring significantly higher than the district and state averages.

While B.R. Foreign Language Acad. Immersion Magnet and Mayfair Laboratory School, both public magnet schools in the district, outperform Great Hearts Harveston, the school still manages to outperform the nearby Westminster Elementary School and Jefferson Terrace Academy in both Mathematics and ELA proficiency. However, the school's higher-than-average chronic absenteeism and dropout rates are areas of concern that may need to be addressed through targeted interventions and support programs.

Open Quote I am deeply disappointed and concerned about the way Great Hearts Harveston handled my child’s education and safety. Despite having a legally mandated IEP (Individualized Education Program) and BIP (Behavior Intervention Plan) in place, the school repeatedly failed to implement the supports and accommodations required by law. Even more troubling, my child was subjected to illegal restraint — an action that is not only unacceptable, but also a violation of their rights.

These actions reflect a serious lack of training, accountability, and respect for students with disabilities. As a parent, I expected collaboration, support, and compliance with federal and state special education laws. Instead, I encountered negligence and harm. If your child requires any form of individualized support, I strongly urge you to consider other educational options.

This experience has had lasting consequences for our family, and I hope sharing it can help protect other children from similar mistreatment. Close Quote
