EBR Virtual Academy

EBR Virtual Academy in Baton Rouge, LA, is a virtual school within the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, serving 169 students from Pre-K through 12th grade in a non-traditional learning environment. This school stands out for its remarkably low student-teacher ratio of 7.2:1, which is dramatically smaller than nearby schools like IDEA Bridge (21.7:1) and Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy (21.3:1), allowing for highly personalized instruction. Academically, the school shows a clear strength in English Language Arts, with 67% of students proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—outpacing the district average of 64% and far exceeding other alternative schools like EBR Readiness Superintendent Academy (26%). However, math performance is a challenge, with only 47% proficient compared to the district's 55%, and high school Algebra I proficiency is particularly low at 23% versus 51% district-wide.

Despite being a virtual school, EBR Virtual Academy faces a high chronic absenteeism rate of 36.1%, which is above the district average of 30.5% and starkly contrasts with other virtual schools like University View Academy (4.7%) and Louisiana Virtual Charter Academy (0.2%). This suggests that the school serves a more at-risk population that struggles with engagement, even in a flexible online setting. The school's graduation rate of 53.8% is well below the district (76.3%) and state (85.0%) averages, and its dropout rate has been highly volatile, spiking from 0.4% in 2020-2021 to 42.2% in 2021-2022 before dropping to 5.9% in 2023-2024. A direct comparison with Southern University Laboratory Virtual School (SULVS), another virtual alternative school, reveals vastly different outcomes: SULVS boasts an 88.5% graduation rate and 0% chronic absenteeism, highlighting how student population and support systems can vary widely between similar programs.

A bright spot is the 7th grade, which outperformed the district average in math (58% vs. 54%), English Language Arts (74% vs. 63%), and social studies (63% vs. 48%) in the 2025-2026 school year—a remarkable achievement for an alternative school. The school serves a high-poverty population, with 74% of students receiving free or reduced lunch, a factor that contextualizes its challenges when compared to schools like LSU Laboratory School, which has only 3.4% poverty and near-perfect test scores. For parents considering EBR Virtual Academy, it offers a personalized virtual option with notable ELA strengths and a dedicated 7th-grade program, but families should be aware of the high absenteeism, math struggles, and volatile graduation outcomes that reflect the complex needs of its student body.
