Summary

St. John Elementary School in Lake Charles, LA, is a mid-to-high performing public school serving 670 students in grades PK-5 within the Calcasieu Parish school district, earning a 4-star rating and ranking in the 78th percentile statewide.

This school stands out for its consistent, strong performance across all student groups, a rare achievement that indicates a school-wide culture of high expectations and effective instruction. Notably, St. John ranks in the 95th percentile statewide for Hispanic student performance, placing it 14th out of 266 schools—a remarkable accomplishment that no nearby school matches for any demographic. The school also excels in keeping students in class, with a chronic absenteeism rate of just 14.5%, significantly lower than the district average (20.9%) and far below nearby peers like Brentwood Elementary School (38.2%) and Barbe Elementary School (36.9%). This suggests strong family engagement and a positive school climate.

While St. John is a top-tier choice, it competes with other excellent schools in the area. T. S. Cooley Elementary Magnet School and Prien Lake Elementary School achieve near-perfect test scores and 5-star ratings, but St. John forms a strong second tier alongside A. A. Nelson Elementary School and Dolby Elementary School. Compared to A.A. Nelson, St. John excels in English Language Arts (83% vs. 80%) and Social Studies (70% vs. 67%), and offers a lower student-teacher ratio (12.9 vs. 15.1). The school has shown a clear upward trajectory in performance over recent years, and it effectively "beats the odds" by achieving top-quartile results with a student body where about 66% qualify for free or reduced lunch. One area for potential focus is 4th-grade math, where proficiency (65%) falls below the district average (75%).
