Summary

College Oaks Elementary School in Lake Charles, LA, is a small PK-5 school within the Calcasieu Parish district, serving 278 students in a predominantly low-income area where 82% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While the school has historically ranked in the bottom third of Louisiana elementary schools, recent data shows a slight upward trend, reaching its highest percentile rank (36th) in several years, suggesting a potential turnaround.

A key concern is a severe and worsening chronic absenteeism rate of 34.4%, significantly higher than the district (20.9%) and state (22.5%) averages, which is a primary driver of academic challenges. Interestingly, the school boasts a very low student-teacher ratio of 10.3:1, lower than high-performing nearby schools like Prien Lake Elementary School (12.8:1) and A. A. Nelson Elementary School (15.1:1), yet this resource hasn't translated into strong overall academic gains. The school also shows a troubling "3rd grade cliff," where students perform relatively well in 3rd grade Math (66% proficient) and Social Studies (58% proficient, above the district average of 56%), but proficiency drops dramatically by 4th and 5th grade.

Despite these struggles, College Oaks has a bright spot in 3rd grade Social Studies, and its English Language Arts proficiency has improved from 56% to 67% over two years. However, Math proficiency has declined from 56% to 50% in the same period, indicating inconsistent progress. The school's proximity to both high-performing schools like Prien Lake (98th percentile) and similarly challenged schools like Brentwood Elementary School (38.2% chronic absenteeism) suggests that its issues are tied to specific school-level factors, not just neighborhood demographics. The path to improvement lies in aggressively tackling absenteeism and addressing the academic drop-off in upper elementary grades.

Open Quote College Oaks has proved to be a great school. The office staff is wonderful and helpful, The pre-k and kindergarten teachers are EXCELLENT! I have a child in kindergarten and one who will be entering pre-k for the 2012-2013 year and I am sure they will do great here. We attended the book fair in October, which was a load of fun! And I got to see most of the teachers from the higher grades and they are all so friendly and all about making school and learning fun for our kids. College Oaks is in a quiet neighborhood and honestly I feel good when I leave my child there for the day because I know she will be safe and well cared for which is very important to me when choosing a school.
