Summary

Dutchtown Primary School in Geismar, LA, is a highly performing elementary school (PK-5) serving 541 students within the top-ranked Ascension Parish school district, a district that consistently earns a 5-star rating.

Dutchtown’s most remarkable strength is its exceptional support for students with special needs, ranking 4th in the entire state for this subgroup—a level of performance unmatched by nearby top-tier schools like Bullion Primary School or Prairieville Primary School. The school also achieves strong outcomes for its African American students, ranking in the 93rd percentile statewide. While Dutchtown is a 5-star school, it operates in a neighborhood of exceptionally high-performing schools, meaning it is an excellent choice but not the absolute top-ranked in its immediate vicinity. For example, while Bluff Ridge Primary and Spanish Lake Primary School have higher overall test scores, none match Dutchtown’s targeted excellence for special education. The school also maintains a low chronic absenteeism rate (7.1%), well below the state average, reflecting a strong culture of attendance.

One area for parents to note is a dip in 5th-grade math proficiency, where only 75% of students were proficient—below the district average and significantly lower than peers like Prairieville (92%) and Oak Grove Primary School (87%). Additionally, while the school’s support for low socio-economic status students is strong (88th percentile), it is not as uniquely powerful as its special education programs. Overall, Dutchtown is a consistently excellent school with a slight downward trend from its peak ranking of 23rd in the state a few years ago, but it remains a top-tier choice for families in the Geismar area.

Open Quote Dutchtown Primary is an Excellent Primary School. I have two kids there and every single teacher we have had the past three years have been exceptional. All the way from kindergarten to third grade so far I haven't been able to find a parent or kid that is not happy at that school. Close Quote
