Summary:
Four Fayette County elementary schools serve ZIP code 40504, all through grade 5: three begin in pre-K, while Garden Springs begins in kindergarten. Their 2025–2026 results vary considerably by school and subject; the group average was below the state average in every reported subject, from 2 points below in editing and mechanics to 11 points below in writing. The most important finding is that a ZIP-code-wide picture hides large school differences: the top-to-bottom gap was 33 percentage points in science and 31 points in reading.
Picadome is the clearest academic standout: it led in reading, writing, social studies, and editing and mechanics, and its reading average was 58%, compared with the state’s 50%. Garden Springs led in math, averaging 50%, and in fourth-grade science, at 44%; however, just 14% were proficient in its fifth-grade writing result. At the other end, Cardinal Valley had the lowest reading, science, writing, and social-studies results, including a 26% reading average versus Picadome’s 58%. James Lane Allen had the lowest math average, 32%, but its fourth-grade science result, 41%, exceeded the state’s 40%.
Results improved overall across comparable tests: the school average rose from 34% in 2024–2025 to 39% in 2025–2026, while the state average moved from 44% to 42%; the average gap narrowed from 10 points below the state to 4 points below. Picadome had the largest school-level gain, 11 points, and its SchoolDigger percentile rose from 32 to 60. Current SchoolDigger rankings also place Picadome highest (276 of 684), followed by Garden Springs (295), James Lane Allen (520), and Cardinal Valley (629). School size and other measures do not neatly track results: James Lane Allen’s student-teacher ratio was the group’s lowest at 11.1, while its math average was also lowest; Garden Springs had the highest math average. In 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligibility ranged from 41% at Garden Springs to 67% at James Lane Allen, providing context rather than an explanation for differences.
