Valley Elementary School in Pikeville serves students in prekindergarten through grade 8 and enrolls 844 students, the largest enrollment among the nearby schools in this comparison. SchoolDigger ranks it 36th of 684 Kentucky schools, at the 95th percentile with five stars—the second-highest nearby ranking, behind Millard School at the 99th percentile. The biggest concern for families is eighth-grade math: only 30% of students were proficient, compared with 47% in the district and 39% statewide.

Valley’s results are strong in most subjects, but not consistently so across grades. Its grade-matched reading average was 74%, compared with 65% in the Pike County district and 49% statewide; math averaged 64%, versus 54% in the district and 42% statewide. Social studies was the only listed subject average below the district: 50% compared with 52%, though it was above the state’s 39%. The eighth-grade math result stands out against Valley’s own third- through seventh-grade average of 71%, and nearby published eighth-grade scores included 78% at Elkhorn City Elementary School and 27% at South Floyd Elementary School. Attendance is another challenge: chronic absenteeism was 42%, higher than the district’s 35% and the state’s 24%, and the highest reported rate among nearby schools.

Reading has improved while eighth-grade math has weakened: Valley’s comparable-grade reading average rose from 67% in 2023–24 to 73% in 2025–26, while eighth-grade math fell from 50% to 30%. In 2024–25, 70% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible, below the nearby-school average of 76% but still a majority. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile for special education students rose from 80 in 2023–24 to 96 in 2025–26, while the overall percentile moved from 94 to 95—a notable improvement in the school’s ranking for this group.
