Summary

Warfield Elementary School serves 332 students in pre-K through grade 6 in Warfield, in eastern Kentucky’s Martin County. Its results are mixed: reading has improved and fifth-grade writing stands out, while mathematics and editing and mechanics are weak compared with state results. Chronic absenteeism has fallen substantially, from 59% in 2022–2023 to 38% in 2025–2026, but remains above the state’s 24% rate. The most important concern is that, despite progress, chronic absenteeism is still high—14 percentage points above the state.

Fifth-grade writing is the clearest academic strength: 44% of students were proficient in 2025–2026, 9 points above the state and level with the district. But fifth-grade editing and mechanics was a pronounced weakness at 24%, compared with 48% statewide and 42% in the district; it was below every nearby school with a reported score, including Eden Elementary School at 56% and Bevins Elementary School at 74%. Mathematics also lagged: across the reported grades 3, 4, and 6, Warfield averaged 28%, versus 43% for the state and 35% for the district. Reading is closer to the state overall, though uneven by grade: fifth-grade reading was 56%, above the state’s 51%, while sixth-grade reading was 50%, below the state’s 54% and the district’s 66%.

Reading and attendance have improved over time, but other trends are mixed. Average reading proficiency across grades 3–6 rose from 33% in 2022–2023 to 48% in 2025–2026, narrowing the gap with the state from 13 points to 3; fifth-grade writing also increased from 33% to 44%. SchoolDigger placed Warfield at the 29th percentile with 1 star in 2025–2026, below all five nearby schools with rankings, which ranged from the 33rd percentile at Inez Elementary School to the 88th at Bevins. The student-teacher ratio was 17.4 in 2024–2025, the highest among the six nearby schools, and 74% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year, compared with a nearby-school average of 70%.
