Summary

Stopher Elementary in Louisville, KY, is a high-performing public school serving 781 students from Pre-K through 5th grade in the eastern suburbs, part of the Jefferson County district. This school stands out for its exceptional academic results, ranking in the 89th percentile statewide (73rd out of 685 schools) for the 2024-2025 school year, with a long history of top-tier performance. Stopher also boasts a very low chronic absenteeism rate of just 7.8%, far below the district average of 33.1%, and only about 14% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, indicating a highly engaged and supportive community.

Compared to nearby Jefferson County schools, Stopher is in a different academic league. For example, in 4th Grade Reading, Stopher achieved 70% proficiency, while Hite Elementary reached 52% and Chancey Elementary only 34%. Its chronic absenteeism rate is also dramatically lower than neighbors like Zachary Taylor Elementary (31.3%) and Bowen Elementary (17.5%). Interestingly, Stopher achieves these results with a per-student spending of $18,257, which is less than many lower-performing peers, suggesting its success is driven by factors like strong community support and effective resource use rather than just high spending.

While Stopher is a top-tier choice, it is not the highest-performing in the broader area. It is outperformed by Kenwood Station Elementary (ranked 69th) and the elite Anchorage Independent Public School (ranked 1st in the state) in the neighboring Oldham County district. This highlights the competitive educational landscape in the eastern Louisville suburbs. For families in the Stopher zone, the choice is between a top-10% school and the #1 school in the state, underscoring the intense focus on educational excellence in this area.

Open Quote Retired KY School Teacher who has viewed this school for the last 10 years. I highly recommend this school with supervision of an exceptional staff of talented hard-working caliber. They think outside the box and are highly creative. If I had another grandchild , I would hope there would be an opening here.
