Summary:
Southgate Independent has one listed school, Southgate Public School, serving prekindergarten through grade 8 with 180 students. Its 2025–2026 results are stronger than the state in most reported reading and mathematics grades, but performance varies considerably by grade and subject. The clearest concern is 5th-grade writing: 12% of students were proficient, compared with 35% statewide.
With only one school listed, there is no meaningful comparison among local schools; Southgate Public School is the area’s only option. Its strongest state comparisons are in mathematics: 3rd grade scored 73% versus 43% statewide, a 30-point lead, and 8th grade scored 60% versus 39%, a 21-point lead. Reading was above the state in five of six reported grades, with 8th grade even at 40%. Across the reported grades, mathematics averaged 53% compared with 42% statewide, while reading averaged 56% compared with 49%. Other results were closer: 4th-grade science was 41% versus 40%, and the two reported social-studies grades were above the state by 4 points on average. Editing and mechanics averaged 43%, 2 points below the state average.
Results changed in different directions across grades, so earlier strengths did not carry over uniformly. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, 3rd-grade mathematics rose 25 points and 3rd-grade reading rose 16 points, while 8th-grade reading fell 22 points and 8th-grade social studies fell 14 points. SchoolDigger’s ranking improved from 466th of 685 schools (32nd percentile) in 2023–2024 to 274th of 684 (60th percentile) in 2025–2026. The school’s student–teacher ratio was 9.0 in 2024–2025, and 76% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year. Chronic absenteeism was 13% in 2025–2026, below the statewide 24%.
