Summary:

High schools in Southwestern High School, Pulaski County High School, and Eagle Academy serve students across grades 6–12; the first two serve grades 9–12, while Eagle serves grades 6–12. The two larger schools report strong graduation rates—about 98% each—but chronic absenteeism is higher than the state rate: 34% at Southwestern and 31% at Pulaski County, compared with 24% statewide. The clearest difference is academic: Pulaski County leads Southwestern in all six reported 2025–2026 subjects.

Pulaski County High School is the standout, scoring 54% in math, 61% in reading, 34% in science, 63% in writing, 51% in social studies, and 48% in editing and mechanics. It is above the state in every subject, with advantages of 8–16 percentage points; its largest lead over Southwestern is 19 points in writing, where scores are 63% and 44%. Southwestern High School is above the state in math, reading, and science, matches it in social studies, and falls below it in writing and editing and mechanics. SchoolDigger ranks Pulaski County 27th of 262 Kentucky high schools, in the 90th percentile with five stars; Southwestern is 108th, in the 59th percentile with three stars. Eagle’s available 2024–2025 10th-grade reading score was 17%, 30 points below the state and 40 below the district; its 2025–2026 test scores are state-suppressed.

Recent results are mixed: writing improved at both larger schools, but math and editing and mechanics declined at both. Across the six subjects, the two-school average advantage over the state narrowed from about 8 points in 2024–2025 to about 7 in 2025–2026. SchoolDigger’s percentile for Southwestern fell from 78th in 2023–2024 to 59th in 2025–2026, while Pulaski County moved from 85th to 90th. As additional context, in 2024–2025 Pulaski County had a 15.2 student-teacher ratio and 54% free/reduced lunch eligible; Southwestern had a 16.6 ratio and 61% free/reduced lunch eligible. Eagle is much smaller, with 38 students, a 38 student-teacher ratio, and 79% free/reduced lunch eligible that year, so its profile is quite different from the two grade 9–12 schools.
