Summary:

Pike County has eight high schools, with enrollments from 14 at Pike County Day Treatment to 561 at Pike County Central; Phelps serves grades 7–12. Five schools have comparable reported results for high-school grades 10 and 11, while three have no usable reported high-school test scores. Across four schools with complete results, the 2025–26 six-subject average was 45%, compared with 39% for the state—a 6-point advantage—but science was the exception, averaging 22% versus 23% statewide. The clearest overall finding is that results are stronger on average than the state’s, but vary considerably by subject and school.

Shelby Valley is the strongest all-around performer: it exceeded state results in all six subjects, including by 32 points in writing (79% versus 47%), 14 points in editing and mechanics (54% versus 40%), and 7 points in mathematics (47% versus 40%). Belfry led reading at 61%, 12 points above the state, though its mathematics result was 37%, 3 points below. Phelps led grade 11 social studies at 49%, 12 points above the state; its grade 7–8 results were more mixed. Pike County Central was 9 points below the state in science and 10 points below in editing and mechanics, despite being 6 points above in mathematics and 10 points above in reading. East Ridge had the lowest reported social studies result, 34%, 3 points below the state.

Results improved relative to the state overall, but not at every school: from 2024–25 to 2025–26, the six-subject average rose 8 points at Shelby Valley, 5 at East Ridge and 2 at Belfry, while it fell 4 points at Pike County Central. SchoolDigger ranked Shelby Valley 39th of 262 Kentucky high schools (85th percentile), compared with Belfry at 59th (77th), Phelps at 72nd (73rd), East Ridge at 91st (65th) and Pike County Central at 137th (48th). Similar enrollment and student-teacher ratios do not predict similar results: Shelby Valley and Pike County Central enroll 503 and 561 students, with ratios of 15.2 and 16.5, respectively. Their free/reduced lunch eligible measures were 63% and 52% in 2024–25. Attendance also differs: chronic absenteeism was 46% at Shelby Valley and 55% at Belfry, compared with 19% at Phelps.
